Embracing independence: Why retirement villages are ideal for women that are on their own

No matter who you are, doing things on your own can be both daunting and at times lonely, it’s important to remember that it’s natural to feel that way. We’re only human after all. In fact, we are scientifically proven to be pack animals and have a high need for social interaction. At ExtraCare we are passionate about how retirement villages, with their unique blend of security, social opportunities, and independent living, offer a haven tailored to the needs and wants of many retired women on their own.

Security and peace of mind

In all of our retirement villages at ExtraCare we prioritise the security of our residents, as we know how important it is to have a safe place to call home. This allows everyone, especially those who are on their own who may feel more vulnerable, to live safely and securely. This sense of security enables you to focus on what truly matters—enjoying life to the fullest.

A Hughenden Gardens resident’s family member said:

“Moving my mum into the village has been a huge success and she only regrets that she couldn’t have done it years ago. She feels safe and secure, and there is always plenty going on.”

Community

One of the most significant advantages of retirement living is the strong sense of community. Living amongst like-minded individuals creates a supportive environment where friendships flourish. For women who are on their own, this companionship can combat feelings of isolation and loneliness, leading to a richer, more fulfilling social life. From communal events to shared hobbies, our retirement villages offer numerous opportunities to connect with others.

Independent living

Whilst we at ExtraCare promote and encourage independent living for as long as possible, our villages do offer a range of amenities and services designed to make life just that bit easier. This comes in the form of low maintenance homes, an on-site shop and market (village dependent) plus health and wellbeing services. We find that this independence empowers our residents to explore new hobbies, to travel, and to embrace a lifestyle tailored to their preferences.

Independent living at our locations has a tangible and measured impact on residents’ physical health and on the NHS. Previous research studies carried out with Aston and Lancaster Universities showed a huge 46% reduction in routine and regular GP visits, unplanned hospital stays which reduced from 8-14 days to 1-2 days, and NHS costs that reduced by 38%, just a number of the benefits of moving to a retirement village.

Access to on-site care facilities

As we all age, access to quality healthcare becomes increasingly important. At ExtraCare we pride ourselves on our high-quality care and wellbeing services that we provide for residents across all of our villages. Although only 20% of our residents are in receipt of care, knowing care is there if and when you need it offers peace of mind.

Recreational opportunities

If you live alone, it is probably even more important to get out and about, and our retirement villages will have you doing just that. Equipped with a variety of recreational facilities, ranging from fitness centres to hobby rooms and libraries, you can enjoy engaging in physical activities, creative pursuits, or intellectual endeavours. Not only could this enhance your overall wellbeing, but it could also provide ample opportunities to meet new people and build lasting friendships.

Financial considerations

Money can be a big worry for those that live alone, with everything riding on you financially. However, our retirement villages offer various options to suit different budgets. From outright purchase, to shared-ownership, to social rent, our aim is to be affordable for all. Alongside this, with the absence of larger property upkeep costs and reduced fixed cost utility bills, the move to an integrated retirement community for retired single females provides a stable and predictable financial environment, allowing you to plan for the future with confidence and at ease.

All in all, by fostering a sense of belonging, providing access to care services, and encouraging independent living, retirement villages empower sole occupants to lead fulfilling and active lives. Retirement living isn’t just a housing decision; it’s a lifestyle choice that can transform your later years into a vibrant, enriching experience. A retirement village might just be the perfect place for you to call home.
