Bournville Gardens
After a serious accident Lennox found solace and support at Bournville Gardens Village. Here he discusses his journey from isolation to his new life.
In 2011, after a serious accident that left me with a broken neck, I was living in a high-rise apartment. I moved to a bungalow, hoping it would be more suitable, but the experience was isolating and emotionally draining. I felt completely cut off from the world. One day, I decided to enquire about Bournville Gardens Village where my family lived nearby.
After a wait I was offered a place, and accepting it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. When I first moved to Bournville Gardens, my mobility was severely restricted. I used two crutches, could barely tie my shoelaces, and walking was difficult due to nerve damage in my knees. Despite these challenges, my life began to improve immediately. Over eight years, my physical condition and mental health went from 30% to 70%. Now even if it never improves beyond this, I’m grateful to be independent.
The transition from my bungalow to the village was smooth, with excellent support from the staff, who assisted with my move and checked in regularly. The sense of community was a complete contrast to the isolation I had experienced in the bungalow. Now, I volunteer at the gym on Mondays and Tuesdays, I feel connected. I walk around the village for rehabilitation, chat with neighbours, and enjoy the bar’s social atmosphere. My story has even inspired others.

Initially, few believed I would improve, as I could barely lift my legs, but through regular gym sessions, I’ve made significant progress, strengthening my lower body despite my nerve damage. Volunteering at the gym has kept me active and engaged, and the village instructor, Lindsay, has been instrumental in helping me with stretching, balance, and mindset. It’s my therapy, allowing me to meet new people while maintaining independence.
Living in BGV also offers 24-hour healthcare, providing real peace of mind. The doctor’s surgery is right across the road, and though I don’t need carers now, knowing help is available is reassuring. The supportive community here is special—people look out for one another.
After nearly nine years at Bournville Gardens Village, I can confidently say it’s been the best decision for my health and wellbeing. The friendly environment and sense of belonging has transformed my life. I wholeheartedly recommend moving to an ExtraCare community for anyone seeking independence and support.
