ExtraCare’s Recruitment Apprentice Charlene won DBC Training’s Sales & Recruitment Apprentice of the Year recently. Here Charlene discusses her apprenticeship, what it meant to win the award and future plans.

Charlene - Recruitment Apprentice

Head Office

I have not only grown in confidence but have learnt so many valuable skills along the way. Whilst I am very proud of my achievements I could not have achieved it without the support I have had off those at ExtraCare.

What kind of employment were you in prior to your apprenticeship?

Prior to my apprenticeship I was a Peer Support worker in a wellbeing hub for St Giles Trust.

What inspired you to start an apprenticeship with us?

I always had a passion to be a part of an individual’s carer journey and wanted a totally new challenge.

What does your current role entail at ExtraCare?

I’m a recruitment apprentice on the recruitment team, managing all of the non – care roles across all of our HO and locations. This involves the whole recruitment cycle, preparing job requirements, identifying candidate profiles, sourcing candidates, screening candidates, selecting candidates, hiring process, and onboarding. I also support the HR team with the long service awards and other small admin duties.

How have you found your apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship has been challenging but I feel I have really grown in both knowledge and confidence and learnt a lot of new skills.

How have you found support in your apprenticeship?

The support in my apprenticeship from my DBC mentor Rebecca Evans has been amazing and I couldn’t have asked for someone better to support me.

How do you feel having won apprentice of the year?

I was over the moon winning this award and it represents the hard work I have put into my apprenticeship.

How did you celebrate?

I celebrated my award by treating myself to a new car and a holiday.

Where will you display your award?

My lovely award sits on my desk currently at work.

Who has helped you and supported you during your apprenticeship?

I have been supported by my Manager Kathy Nesson, the recruitment Team, Hr Team and the Learning & Development team. Especially Sean and Vicki who helped me with my off the job training by letting me join them going out to locations and delivering training alongside them.

What are your next steps, career wise?

I’d like to continue to progress into a higher position within ExtraCare and hopefully bring some more awards home.

What are your future hopes for your apprenticeship?

I am now in the final stages of my apprenticeship, and just need to pass my functional skills maths, after my apprentice I would like to continue my career with ExtraCare.

Would you recommend your apprenticeship to other young apprentices?

Yes definitely I have not only grown in confidence but have learnt so many valuable skills along the way.

Whilst I am very proud of my achievements I could not have achieved it without the support I have had off those at ExtraCare.

The biggest benefit for myself is the chance to communicate with customers coming into the shop and giving them a good impression of the charity therefore coming back to the shop frequently.
