Volunteers help transform the gardens at Shenley Wood Village
A team of volunteers have helped transform the gardens at Shenley Wood Retirement Village. Seven volunteers from Santander Technology spent the day with the older residents to prepare the grounds for a new rose garden.
Peter Brookes resident at Shenley Wood Retirement Village comments: “I watched from my window as the Santander volunteers undertook the hard ground work and very much appreciated their efforts. I welcome the start of the project to convert the area to a rose garden which will provide a colourful landscape from my apartment and a delightful, scented space in which to socialise with neighbours and family”.
The volunteers attended the village as part of a five day annual volunteering initiative to help the local community. Last November the group had lent their time maintaining other gardens on site to the delight of residents, which are now blooming brightly.
Simon Bardsley, Manager, Santander Technology said: “It is an opportunity to support and be part of the local community, it helps with team building outside the usual workplace and the satisfaction of seeing a difference made on the day is a great boost to morale.”
Linda Ellen, Village Manager at Shenley Wood Retirement Village comments: “It was great to see the volunteers and residents at Shenley Wood Village come together to work on the gardens. The new rose gardens will provide another lovely outdoor social space for our residents to enjoy come the warmer weather.”

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust
ExtraCare is a registered charity established in 1988 and based in Coventry. Our vision is better lives for older people and our mission is creating sustainable communities that provide homes older people want, lifestyles they can enjoy and care if it’s needed. To deliver our vision and mission we essentially do three things:
- We develop new villages
- We operate villages and schemes
- We support our villages, schemes and our ‘extra-care’ model through fundraising, advocacy and research
Each village or scheme has 5 to 18 social, health and leisure facilities that are accessible to our residents, volunteers and local people representing all age groups living in surrounding communities. Our Charity Shops help fund care and well-being services for older people living at our each of our locations.
