Gloucester Retirees Spread Holiday Cheer with Handcrafted Christmas Cards
Residents of a Gloucester retirement village have been bringing their art to life this festive season with the creation of stunning handmade Christmas cards, blending creativity, community, and charity.
The project led by volunteer organizer Mike Carter, brought together 14 of ExtraCare’s St Oswald’s talented residents from a weekly drawing class to design 19 unique cards, which are now a sell-out success in the Village’s newly revamped gallery space.
The idea for the Christmas card project began a few years ago when Mike, a professional artist and illustrator, brought some of his own handmade Christmas cards to class. Inspired by his designs, residents started creating their own artwork, initially as a way to decorate their classroom window. The response was so positive that the designs were turned into cards, first used to thank volunteers and then sold to raise funds for the Arts program.
“Seeing the enthusiasm and talent in our class inspired me to turn their drawings into something meaningful and lasting,” said Mike. “It started as a thank-you to our volunteers, but it’s grown into a tradition that brings joy to everyone in the Village.”
The project kicked off in August, with participants dedicating weeks of effort to create their designs, ensuring the cards would be ready for the busy holiday season. Over 400 cards featuring the 19 designs were printed, each one showcasing illustrations created by residents.
The cards are being sold in the gallery space, with St Oswald’s volunteer reception team managing sales. Proceeds from the cards go back into the Arts program, helping to upgrade materials and sustain creative opportunities for residents.

Mike’s journey with St Oswald’s began in 2021/22 as a drawing instructor, and he later became Volunteer Organiser, combining his artistic passion with his dedication to the community. Mike comments,“This project reflects the creativity and resilience of our residents. It’s been an honour to see their confidence grow and to share their talents with the wider community.”
As the cards fly off the shelves, the residents of St Oswald’s have once again demonstrated the power of creativity to bring people together, share joy, and make a difference.
