ExtraCare Wins Older People’s Development of the Year
ExtraCare’s Bournville Gardens Village in Birmingham has been announced winner of the ‘The Older People’s Development of the Year’ at the 2016 Top 60 Awards run by Inside Housing Magazine.
Bournville Gardens Village opened in November 2015 and is the fourth of five Villages being opened by The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Birmingham City Council by 2017. The Village is also a partnership with the Bournville Village Trust.
Bournville Gardens offers a unique model of homes, care and lifestyle and is actively transforming the lives of over 500 residents and local older people by:
• Improving people’s health and well-being
• Providing a range of homes and tenures to suit all budgets
• Freeing up much-needed family housing in Birmingham
• Delivering several of Birmingham City Council’s key housing objectives
• Reducing NHS and social care costs
Shortly after the Village opened ITV’s ‘Tonight’ programme came to the Village for its feature on tackling isolation. Resident Margery Crampton (74) told her story about a journey from isolation and depression, when her disabled husband died, to a happier life as a resident at the Village where she volunteers. Margery concluded the feature surrounded by new friends, saying: “The old Margery’s come back. I lost myself, but I’m back – back to stay.”
