During the national Covid-19 crisis musicians have inspired hearts and minds, playing to older people living at The ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s Bournville Gardens Village.
As part of Volunteers Week 2020, professional cellists Mark Broadhead and Helen Edgar performed a ‘socially distanced’ (but nonetheless very sociable) concert in the Village Gardens with their children Harry (16) and Kezia (11).
Their programme mixed soothing classical pieces with sing-a-long favourites, tunes they’ve been playing in their street with neighbours each Thursday for the Clap For Carers.
Helen Edgar, a cellist in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), said:
“As musicians, we are really missing performing to live audiences. Volunteers Week gave us this incredible chance to see a real audience again, looking down from their balconies and at a distance in the gardens. And when we heard everyone whistling along to “Always look on the Bright Side of Life” it was an emotional moment for us all.
