Charity builds on success of Coventry Retirement Village
More than 60 brand new homes for the city’s older people are being created by Coventry based charity The ExtraCare Charitable Trust.
The charity has announced it will be starting the long-awaited Phase Two of its award-winning Earlsdon Park Village development in summer 2018. The development will create an additional 60 new apartments, bringing the village’s total to 322 homes.
The new, state-of the-art one and two bedroom apartments will be available with a mix of tenure, reflecting the charity’s vision of creating better lives for older people across a wide section of the local community.
When complete, the Phase Two development will also provide additional parking spaces and a new landscaped garden area. Residents are expected to move in to their new homes towards the end of 2019.
Phase One of Earlsdon Park Village opened in summer 2016 and has proved popular with residents, their families, visiting volunteers and members of the local community. Before the village opened, over 1,800 households registered their interest in moving to a home within the village.
With 18 communal social and health facilities, a care team for those who need support and a full programme of activities including fitness, crafts, dancing, social events and trips, the village is transforming the lives of local people. Independent research with Aston University has found that the ‘ExtraCare model’ reduces depression, decreases unplanned hospital stays and brings down GP visits for those living in ExtraCare villages and schemes. Research also shows that NHS costs drop by up to 38% per person each year.*
The village, a partnership with Coventry City Council, represents a £44m investment in the city’s older people. Over 200 construction jobs were created during its development and nearly 100 three, four and five bedroom family homes have been released back into the community after residents moved into the village.
Kevin Willetts, Executive Director of Development and Sales says: “As a local charity celebrating our 30th year supporting older people in this city we’re delighted we can move forward with Phase Two. We have a waiting list for this village and this extension will ensure more local people benefit from the health and well-being, care and lifestyle services we have on offer here.”
