BBC Real Marigold Hotel Star, Rustie Lee, Joins ExtraCare Charitable Trust at Birmingham’s 50+ Show

Celebrity chef Rustie Lee welcomed visitors to The ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s stand at this year’s 50+ Show at the NEC.
Rustie chatted to show visitors while she made smoothies on a specially adapted smoothie making bicycle. She is currently appearing on BBC travel documentary series, The Real Marigold Hotel. The series follows eight celebrities as they explore retirement living in India.
On the stand, ExtraCare showcased its new Longbridge Retirement Village which opens this summer. Longbridge Village will provide 260 one and two bed apartments, along with an inspirational lifestyle. The village will have a range of communal facilities including a bar and bistro, village hall, IT suite, hair and beauty salon, gym and shop.
It is the fifth of at least five Villages planned as part of a £200m development programme between The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Birmingham City Council.
Rustie said: “ExtraCare is a great charity doing great things for older people. We’re all looking forward to them opening their fifth Birmingham Village in Longbridge this summer.”
Longbridge Village is one of five ExtraCare villages in Birmingham that are transforming the lives of older people.
For many ExtraCare residents, new homes have meant new friends and a new lease of life. Activities include everything from IT classes to wheelchair aerobics, abseiling, and reminiscence groups. The villages offer health and well-being support and care is provided where it is needed. They have also become social hubs with facilities available to the local community.
Independent research with Birmingham’s Aston University has shown that Birmingham’s ExtraCare Villages deliver outstanding outcomes in terms of residents’ health and well-being and reduces NHS costs by 38 per cent.
