Over 100 local people gathered recently to unveil a foundation stone for The ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s new retirement village in High Wycombe, Hughenden Gardens.
Joyce Melia opened the curtain to officially unveil the foundation stone. 75-year-old Joyce said she would enjoy meeting new people at Hughenden Gardens and is hoping to volunteer.
She said: “Unveiling the foundation stone was great fun. I thought it was nicely put together and very attractive – I thoroughly enjoyed the day!”
Joyce, a former teacher, now lives in Hazlemere. She said moving to the Village would be a new start for her.
The 260-home retirement village is due to open in 2018, on Hughenden Road at the north of High Wycombe town centre. Apartments will be available for purchase, shared ownership and rental. Applications open later this year and over 1,100 households have already registered their interest.
People who are interested in moving to the Village or just finding out more are invited to attend a series of regular information meetings. Prospective residents are already making friends and having the chance to have their questions answered, as well as getting regular development updates from ExtraCare.
The project is a partnership between registered charity The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, Wycombe District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council, with a contribution from the Homes and Communities Agency.
Cllr Mahboob Hussain, Chairman of Wycombe District Council, said: “Today’s event was great – it was fantastic to see such a good local turnout from the community – people who live locally who are all interested in the new ExtraCare retirement village currently being built on land which Wycombe District Council has brought back into use. It shows that our regeneration investment has in turn unlocked investment in this project which will provide great accommodation for local people.”
Cllr Val Letheren, Chair of Buckinghamshire County Council, said: “As a long term resident of High Wycombe and a former mayor, I’m delighted that ExtraCare have chosen Wycombe as the site of their latest development.”
