Eddie the Eagle joins Olympic torch relay in Evesham

23rd May, 2016

Eddie the Eagle visited ExtraCare’s Yates Court housing scheme in Evesham recently to mark the Charity’s Olympic celebrations!

ExtraCare, who have 31 retirement villages and smaller schemes across the country, are holding their own Olympic torch relay. In the months leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the ExtraCare torch, designed by a resident from a retirement village in Sheffield, is travelling between each ExtraCare location.

Staff and residents been challenged to get a photograph of the torch with a celebrity, so Bev Jones, Social Club Team Leader at Yates Court, arranged for former ski jumper Eddie the Eagle to visit the scheme.

Eddie had arranged to spend an hour with them but remained for two-and-a-half hours. Bev said: “Obviously he must have enjoyed himself taking part in our events and games.

“It was absolutely amazing. He was the best celebrity we could have had.”

More than 130 people were present at the event as residents from ExtraCare’s retirement village in Milton Keynes, Lovat Fields Village, joined Yates Court for the day and took part in a series of challenges and games.

Other visitors included the former Mayor of Evesham, members of the local police force and local councillor Jo Sandals.
