Joyce Blood, a volunteer at ExtraCare’s Charity Shop in Salford, has completed the Great Manchester Run to raise money for ExtraCare.
The Morrison's Great Manchester Run is Europe’s biggest 10K running event, and has seen more than a quarter of a million enthusiastic runners take to the streets of Manchester since it was established in 2003.
At this year’s run, ExtraCare was represented by Joyce and her sister Rita Hackney.
Joyce, 66, was amongst the original team of staff and volunteers who opened the ExtraCare shop in Salford in 2012; and volunteers on a numbers of days each week.
Shop Manager Denise McCarthy says: “Joyce worked for many years until her retirement at Sainsbury’s and has brought a good deal of retail experience to the team.
“Unfortunately, a number of years ago Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has recovered as a result of receiving excellent treatment from her local hospital and staying as healthy as possible through swimming, now running and of course volunteering with ExtraCare.
“The time that Joyce achieved in completing the Manchester 10K was 01:30.28 which placed her 42nd out of those ladies taking part between the ages of 65 and 69 and this in her very first 10K run!
“Joyce and Rita have so far managed to raise in the region of £300.00 for ExtraCare as a result of their efforts.”
Denise adds: “Whilst we at ExtraCare would like to congratulate and thank Joyce and Rita in their efforts, an even bigger congratulations must go to Joyce on the news that she was passed the day after this year's Manchester 10K - the all clear from her medical team on her cancer!”
